Orgeat

Orgeat is an almond-based syrup that adds nutty, floral notes to cocktails and mocktails. Known for its use in Tiki cocktails, Orgeat gives a body and sweetness that adds a luxurious edge to cocktails. Liqueurs like Amaretto can be substituted to give the nutty, floral flavour to drinks but will not impart the same luscious consistency as Orgeat. This recipe from Anders Erikson is an easy way to get this great flavour in your cocktails.

Materials

  • 3 cups White sugar
  • 2 cups Unsweetened Almond Milk Use a good quality almond milk
  • 1 tsp Orange blossom water Available in the grocery store
  • 1-2 tsp Rose water Available in the grocery store
  • 1-2 tsp Almond extract

Instructions

  • Combine sugar and almond milk in a medium saucepan and heat over medium-high heat until sugar dissolves completely.
    Remove from heat, and stir in orange blossom water, rose water and almond extract.
    Cool, seal in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to four weeks.
    You can add vodka in small quantities ( about 1/2 oz) to extend the shelf life to about three months.

Notes

Note: This recipe does make a large quantity of Orgeat. You can refrigerate the portion you need and freeze the rest indefinitely.
